Location: Olson 2-D Studio, Roxie Remley Center
Tuition: $145 per 8-week session + Supply fee: $5
Great landscape painting can center us and connect us more deeply with the natural world; it can awe, inspire, mystify–stir something deep within our hearts that connects us all to something bigger. This course aims to demystify why some landscape paintings hold entire rooms by themselves, while others are lucky to get a second glance. With technical perspective and aesthetic inspiration from historical giants of the genre like J.M.W. Turner and the Hudson River School painters, students will explore traditional landscape techniques in depth, moving from life-drawing to color and master studies, and finally fully realized works in watercolor, oil paint, and pastel. Emphasis will be given to color theory and composition as well as the intricacies of rendering atmospheric effects across several media and various subgenres of landscape (city, aquatic, nocturne, etc.). The goal of this course is not only learning to paint moving landscapes but also learning to perceive the world more richly. Purchasing supplies will be discussed at the first class.
