About the Artist
Bio
Jane Pleak graduated from Edinboro State University, Edinboro PA in 1971 with a BS in Art Education. Taught in public schools form K through 12 in Canaseraga ,New York. Was a welder for General Electric Erie, PA working on locomotives.
I managed the staff at Martin Luther King Jr Art House in Erie,PA with classes in music, karate, band, ballet, photography, printmaking, ceramic, and drawing and painting to the inner-city community.
I received my MFA at Indiana State University, Terra Haute, IN 1981
I worked as a master potter in Cambridge Springs PA for a production potter. I started teaching ceramics at Georgia Southern College in 1984 and retired 2012 professor emerita.
During my tenure in ceramics at GSU I had the Empty Bowl event to have the students work with the local Food Bank and we offered a lovely ceramic sale at the end of every term to explore the sale and public exchange in the arts. Students were encouraged to develop portfolios and enter the professional world of the arts. I have exhibited paintings, mixed media and ceramic work throughout my life in regional and national exhibitions.
I am very fortunate to have students who are working in the arts throughout the county. Through the program developed at Georgia Southern students have gone on to teach, in neightborhood programs, support arts in local areas, become lawyers, work in 3D design in Hollywood, teach in K-12 schools, colleges and universities, run national Clay Programs, work on internships in clay and employed their love of arts in a variety of areas.
Artist Statement:
This exhibition references my ongoing joy of figurative work and my fascination with Bower birds, random objects, and assemblages. The majority of this work deals with anatomical ideas. After years of teaching ceramics, looking at forms about volume, feet, neck, handles is second nature. It has been exciting to have an abundance of time to research and create.
